GLOSSARY
The quiet handoff
Control rarely leaves in one decision. It leaves in a thousand small ones that each made the day easier.
Definition
The quiet handoff is the transfer of judgment from a person who can be asked to explain a decision to a system that cannot — accepted because the system’s suggestion was good, and because reading the whole thing again felt like a luxury.
How to detect one
- You cannot explain a recent decision without saying “the system recommended it”.
- Nobody in the room can name who is accountable for the output.
- The work cannot be done by hand any more, and nobody remembers when that stopped being true.
Why it matters
Because it is invisible while it is happening and obvious after an incident. The remedy is not refusing the tool; it is keeping one named human, one out-of-band check and one tested fallback on the decisions that could hurt someone.
